3M Thinsulate SM600L Automotive Camper Van Insulation
Our Review
After the Siless Liner, we install 3M Thinsulate as the primary insulation layer. Thinsulate is a lightweight, hydrophobic fiber insulation designed for vehicles, so it does not readily absorb moisture, resists odors, and conforms well to the irregular cavities in van walls, doors, and ceilings. At about 1.65″ thick with an R-value of roughly 5.45 per inch, a single layer provides substantial thermal insulation while also helping reduce road noise.
In deeper wall and ceiling cavities, we sometimes install two layers of Thinsulate to take advantage of the available space and increase the overall thermal resistance. More thickness means better resistance to heat flowing into the van in summer and escaping in winter, provided the material is not excessively compressed. This layered approach gives us a high-performing insulation system while still using materials that tolerate the moisture and vibration found in a vehicle.
